The proposed Evros Biosphere Reserve aims to strengthen sustainable local development, recognizing the rural landscape and its people as key agents of success. It promotes productive management models that support agricultural activities, reinforce social cohesion, and highlight natural and cultural heritage, while fostering innovation, cooperation, and international recognition.
Aligned with the three core functions defined by UNESCO, the Evros Biosphere Reserve – Dadía Forest, Evros Delta & Samothraki Island – seeks to:
Nature Conservation:
Enhance key habitats and wildlife species
Preserve vital environmental resources (e.g. water)
Promote and showcase landscape diversity
Develop marine conservation initiatives
Sustainable Social and Economic Development:
Support primary-sector producers
Implement infrastructure projects improving quality of life and social cohesion
Encourage use of local agri-food products in tourism
Create new employment opportunities and services
Highlight local producers as stewards of nature
Innovation, Knowledge, Learning, and Awareness:
Invest in lifelong learning on rural and tourism management
Raise public awareness of Nature, Culture, and Sustainability
