Activities and Development
Across the Dadía slopes, Samothraki highlands and Evros Delta plains, extensive livestock farming produces Thrace PDO feta cheese and goat graviera. In the Feres wetlands, water buffalo are raised for “Kavourmas of Thrace” and traditional dairy products.
The plains host cereal, cotton, and sunflower crops, while the Feres rice fields yield Evros rice of outstanding quality. In Makri, extra virgin olive oil is produced, and vineyards in Ávantas, Makri, and Soufli revive the Thracian PGI wine tradition. Aromatic herbs, legumes and greenhouse vegetables complement the region’s agricultural mosaic.
Soufli, a centuries old silk production center, continues to rear silkworms and weave fine silks, producing nearly all of Greece’s silk and preserving a craft of high cultural and economic value.
With a strategic port and coastal fisheries, the sea connects the region to transport and energy networks, underscoring its role as a bridge between local life, economy, and global flows.
Tourism focuses on authentic, alternative experiences: on Samothraki, visitors enjoy hiking, canyoning in Hagia Gorge and thermal springs at Kato Thermes. In Alexandroupoli, the coastline offers seaside escapes, while boat tours in the Evros Delta and cycling routes gain popularity. Ecotourism in Dadía and the Delta includes birdwatching, wildlife photography and environmental education at the Visitor Information Centers.
